ADEP Castelo de Paiva is located in the Curvite area, in the town of Santa Cecília, municipality of Castelo de Paiva. Its main facilities are situated within Parque das Tílias (Lime Tree Park), a space that offers a calm and engaging environment, ideal for exploring local heritage.
ADEP, an acronym for the Association for the Study and Defense of the Historical-Cultural Heritage of Castelo de Paiva, was founded in 1980. Since its creation, the association has been dedicated to the conservation, study, and dissemination of the region's heritage and environment, establishing itself as a central element in preserving the municipality's cultural identity. Its work covers areas such as history, archaeology, ethnography, photography, and handicrafts, highlighting the cultural value of the community.
On site, visitors can explore the Espaço Primeiras Artes (First Arts Space), which displays a significant ethnographic collection. This space illustrates the ancient traditional activities of Castelo de Paiva, from agricultural and river-related tasks to mining practices, handicrafts, and small-scale industry. A notable section is dedicated to the rabelo boat and to Architect Filgueiras, gathering testimonies of riverside life, including the "Douro Paiva" boat itself, which can be seen in the park. Additionally, the Casa dos Engenhos Dr. Justino Strecht Ribeiro (Dr. Justino Strecht Ribeiro's House of Mills) allows visitors to observe the reconstruction of several ancient mills, such as olive oil and flax mills (atafonas), and a wine press, which once were part of local daily life. A collection of fossils from a tropical forest, approximately 300 million years old and originating from the Pejão Coal Basin, is also on display.
The Biblioteca Manuel Afonso da Silva (Manuel Afonso da Silva Library) serves as a documentation center where regional newspapers and a vast collection of documents related to the history and archaeology of Castelo de Paiva and its surrounding area can be consulted. In turn, the Arquivo Fotográfico Luís Lousada Soares (Luís Lousada Soares Photographic Archive) complements this collection, gathering a vast array of images depicting the municipality's heritage and monuments, thus constituting a visual record of its evolution and identity over time.
