Situated on Pico da Urze, in the parish of São Pedro, the complex stands on a slightly elevated ground above Angra do Heroísmo. From the courtyard and exterior spaces, one can sense the slope of the terrain and the proximity of the Atlantic, with open views of the urban layout and the green landscape of Terceira.
The manor house is located at the transition between the city and the rural surroundings, in a quiet and open area. Its peripheral position allows appreciation of the profile of Monte Brasil and the continuity of the ceramic tile roofs that mark Angra's architecture.
The building was, for centuries, the stately home of the Corte Real family, maintaining the scale and character of a prestigious residence. In 1980, it suffered damage from the earthquake on January 1st, undergoing recovery works that preserved its original design and traditional materials.
Over time, it hosted significant moments for the community. The visit of Pope John Paul II is recorded, who rested and lunched here during his visit to the Azores. Currently, it is part of the heritage of the Diocese of Angra, maintaining a historical link with the city and its institutions.
The complex features a spacious and ordered floor plan, with low volumes and double-pitched tile roofs. The facade stands out with the warm color of the masonry, finished with white stonework, and a noble portal made of local stone that provides access to the interior courtyard. In the courtyard, high arcades stand out, structuring circulation and creating a sheltered environment.
The construction solutions follow Azorean tradition, combining robustness and sobriety. The symmetrical composition, the balconies, and the rhythmic openings lend the manor a harmonious appearance, while the materials—basalt stone, wood, and ceramic—underline the regional identity.
The private chapel, contiguous to the main body, is one of the most striking elements. Inside, the worked wooden ceiling forms a geometric lattice, enhanced by a central chandelier. The polychrome carved altar, of Baroque inspiration, houses devotional imagery and preserves gilded details.
The space is intimate and secluded, with wooden benches and a simple floor. Light enters through side windows, highlighting the texture of the woodwork and the soft palette of the altarpiece. It is a fine example of the persistence of stately oratories in Azorean architecture.
The manor and the chapel integrate with gardens and landscaped areas that follow the natural slope of the terrain. Curved pedestrian paths and designed flowerbeds soften the ensemble and create perspectives of the building.
The silence of the place, the presence of young trees, and the view of the city and the sea give the visitor a clear reading of the dialogue between architecture and landscape. The feeling is that of a grand country house, at the gates of Angra, where the stately heritage coexists with the serenity of the surroundings.
