The Wheat Museum is located in the locality of Lomba do Loução, in the municipality of Povoação. It is situated in an area that historically had strong ties to cereal production on the island of São Miguel, reflecting the agricultural importance of this territory.
For many years, the municipality of Povoação was renowned for its intense cereal production, earning it the designation of "Island Granary." This agricultural tradition shaped the landscape and the lives of its inhabitants, and the museum seeks to honor this heritage.
The museum occupies the space where an old hydraulic mill was reconstructed. This type of structure, which used the force of water to grind cereals, was fundamental to the local economy, and its restoration allows visitors to observe up close an example of this traditional architecture linked to rural work.
Upon visiting the Wheat Museum, it is possible to discover the instruments and tools that were traditionally used for harvesting and working with wheat.
In addition to the objects, a permanent exhibition, through informative panels, presents the context of cereal cultivation in São Miguel, from sowing to harvesting, explaining the process and its relevance in the history of Azorean agriculture.
The main objective of this space is to preserve and disseminate the memory of the trades and traditions that were intimately linked to the wheat cycle and the life of rural communities, especially in the Lombas. It allows for an understanding of the effort and know-how passed down through generations.
