Situated on Rua Dr. Guilherme Poças, in the parish of São Sebastião, the Church and Convent of Santo André is located in the historic and urban area of the city of Ponta Delgada. Its central position allows it to be easily integrated into a tour of the Azorean capital, proving to be an accessible point of interest for visitors exploring the city on foot.
This remarkable architectural complex was founded in the 16th century, specifically in 1567, on the initiative of Diogo Vaz Carreiro and his wife, Beatriz Rodrigues Camelo. A few years later, in 1577, it was handed over to the Order of Saint Francis, becoming the second convent of the Order of Poor Clares to be built in Ponta Delgada. For centuries, its walls bore witness to the cloistered life of these nuns, and the convent's structure still reflects the organization and spaces dedicated to their daily existence, such as the old gatehouse and parlors, which allowed limited contact with the outside world.
The Church and Convent of Santo André is recognized as one of the most beautiful examples of Azorean conventual architecture. Over the centuries, the building has undergone several interventions, resulting in a fusion of styles. Its facade exhibits expressive decoration in volcanic stone, a distinctive feature of island architecture, with particular emphasis on the windows dating from the 18th century. Inside the single-nave church, the grandeur is enhanced by the side walls and the vaulted ceiling, both adorned with rich fresco paintings, created in 1820. The gilded altars and pulpit, also from the same period, complement the atmosphere of art and devotion.
Since 1930, this former convent has housed one of the nuclei of the Carlos Machado Museum, the main museum in Ponta Delgada. This adaptation has allowed for the preservation and enhancement of much of the convent's original structure, transforming it into a space where history and culture converge. In addition to the corridors and other conventual spaces, the church retains its original elements, such as the lower choir and the upper choir, where a pipe organ can still be admired, a testament to the importance of music and liturgy in the lives of the religious who lived here.
