The Mercearia Central, Traditional House Museum Nucleus is located in Água de Pau, a picturesque coastal village in the municipality of Lagoa, on the island of São Miguel, Azores. It is strategically situated in Praça da República (Republic Square), the heart of local life. This central location offers visitors a direct immersion into the daily life of the village, with the building standing out due to its traditional architecture and harmonious integration into the urban environment of the locality.
Upon entering the Museum Nucleus, visitors are transported to the commercial atmosphere of the last century. On the ground floor, the space faithfully recreates an old grocery store and an adjacent tavern. These environments allow visitors to understand the importance of these establishments in the life of the Azorean community, as centers of commerce and socializing, where essential goods were exchanged and daily stories shared. It is an authentic portrayal of local commerce from yesteryear, preserving memories of a bygone era.
Ascending to the upper floor, the residential dimension of the building is revealed. Here, the spaces evoke the domestic life of a local petty bourgeois family, particularly that of José Inácio Vieira Favela and Angelina da Conceição Reis, the former owners of the house. The living areas, including the first floor and the attic, show what daily life was like for a family in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is possible to observe the furniture, utensils, and household organization, providing an intimate perspective on the customs and family environment of the time, a testament to a way of life that shaped Azorean society.
