Located in the central area of Ribeira Grande city, in the parish of Matriz. It stands in a main square, facing a public garden and alongside the course of the Ribeira Grande river. Its position makes it an easily identifiable landmark in the heart of the town.
The history of this municipal building dates back to the early 16th century, with the founding of the Council in 1507. Although the current building had its main construction in the 16th and 17th centuries, it succeeded a previous structure affected by natural events. Its historical and architectural relevance led to its classification as a Property of Public Interest in 1984.
This is a large-scale building with a striking presence in the center of Ribeira Grande. It stands out for its imposing exterior staircase leading to the main entrance. One of its most characteristic elements is the tall clock tower, connected to the main body of the building by a large arch that uniquely allows the passage of the public road underneath. Architectural details such as a window in the Manueline style can also be observed.
Inside the Town Hall, it is possible to find testimonies of local and national history. Noteworthy is the presence of the old pillory stone, a symbol of municipal justice. You can also observe a collection of portraits of Portuguese Heads of State, starting with Queen D. Maria II. The main hall features tile panels dated 1936, which illustrate aspects of local life and culture, such as watermills, the Cavalhadas de São Pedro, or the Holy Spirit festivities.
Due to its history, architecture, and central location, the Town Hall is frequently considered the 'ex-libris' of Ribeira Grande, representing the city's identity and heritage.
