The Lagoa do Peixe (Fish Lake) is located in the parish of Feteiras, in the municipality of Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, Azores archipelago. Situated at about 800 meters of altitude, it is integrated into the vast volcanic structure of the Sete Cidades Massif, one of the most emblematic geological formations on the island.

The natural surroundings are marked by dense forests and pasture areas. The slopes surrounding the lake are dominated by cryptomeria and species typical of the Macaronesian flora, creating a verdant and serene landscape. The atmosphere is tranquil, with the sound of the wind and the singing of birds reinforcing the sense of isolation and natural balance.

Formation and Characteristics

The Lagoa do Peixe occupies the interior of a small volcanic crater, resulting from the ancient geological activity that shaped this part of the island. The surrounding terrain shows its volcanic origin, with cliffs of dark soil and gentle slopes covered in vegetation. The water surface is modest in size, but its setting within the relief creates a picturesque and harmonious image.

One of the most distinctive elements is the black soil scarp visible next to the lake. A dirt path climbs to the top, offering a panoramic view over the interior of the island and the lake itself, which appears differently depending on the light and weather conditions.

Natural Environment and Curiosities

Despite its name, the lake does not currently host any fish species. The name "Lagoa do Peixe" is believed to have originated from reports by local residents who, at one time, found small crayfish in its waters, now non-existent. The designation has remained as a memory of this curious episode.

The location is known for its tranquility and the richness of the surrounding fauna and flora. The contrast between the dark water, the tree-covered slopes, and the volcanic soil gives the area a unique atmosphere, representative of São Miguel's natural landscapes. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate observing Azorean nature in its simplest and most authentic state.

From the top of the scarp, the view extends over much of the central area of the island, revealing a horizon dominated by hills and valleys covered in vegetation. On days with good visibility, the scenery gains depth and color, becoming particularly photogenic.

The natural ensemble of the Lagoa do Peixe, although discreet in size, stands out for its scenic expressiveness and the peaceful environment that surrounds it. It is a place that invites contemplation and a silent pause in the green heart of São Miguel.
