Eguas Lagoon

Category: Nature > Lagoon

District: Açores > Ponta Delgada > Feteiras

Location:

Lagoa das Éguas is situated in a crater of volcanic origin, in the municipality of Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel. It is located at an elevated point, on an elongated ridge, with a comprehensive view of the rural landscape and the distant ocean. The path that accompanies it runs along the edge of the terrain, allowing observation of the depression where the lagoon rests and the gentle, undulating relief around it.

The surroundings are dominated by a continuous carpet of herbaceous and mossy vegetation typical of the higher zones of the island. Wind and clouds move quickly, which can alter visibility in a few minutes and adds a changing character to the scenery.

Origin and Formation:

Lagoa das Éguas occupies the interior of a small volcanic crater, characteristic of the geological formations of the Azores. Its water surface is fed by precipitation and small runoffs, resulting in a calm surface that contrasts with the more rugged surrounding terrain. The crater itself forms a scenic counterpoint to the nearby conical elevation, accentuating the perception of scale and depth of the site.

This configuration is the result of ancient volcanic activity, common in the archipelago, where successive events shaped the relief into interconnected basins, cones, and craters. The lagoon is integrated into a sequence of depressions and small bodies of water that are revealed when traversing the ridge and adjacent areas.

Landscape and Environment:

The space around the lagoon is essentially wild, with a narrow trail following the ridge, offering different perspectives of the lake and the broader landscape. The low, green vegetation, sometimes covered by mist, creates an atmosphere of constant transition between light and shadow, wind and calm. The presence of the distant sea, visible when the sky clears, further enhances the sense of connection between the island's interior and exterior.

This is a place where the contrast between the green tones of the terrain and the soft grey of the clouds becomes part of the visual framing. The topography allows for a clear view of the crater's depth and the reflection of light on the lagoon's surface, which varies according to atmospheric conditions.

Hiking and Observation:

The approach to the lagoon involves an ascent via trails of varying gradients, integrated into the ridge, requiring some attention to the footing and slope. Those who walk the path are rewarded with viewpoints over the lagoon and the surrounding plateaus, with opportunities for photography and contemplation. The route can be part of a larger circuit, allowing for further exploration of nearby depressions without returning by the same track.

The rapid change in weather and the frequent presence of wind are aspects to consider when visiting. On foggy days, visibility can be reduced, altering the perception of contours, while sudden openings in the sky reveal wide views of the island. Observing the lagoon at different times offers a diverse experience, from a misty and discreet immersion to clear and defined panoramas.
