The Maria Vaz Islet, also known as Gadelha Islet, is a prominent coastal formation adjacent to the island of Flores, in the municipality of Santa Cruz das Flores, within the parish of Ponta Delgada. It rises more than 150 meters above sea level, constituting a distinctive landmark in the maritime landscape. Its proximity to the coast makes it a remarkable scenic element for those observing the Atlantic from the island.
This islet is the result of ancient basaltic lava flows, a testament to the intense volcanic activity that shaped the island of Flores. Its structure reveals the regular morphology of these volcanic flows, partially covered by basalt blocks. On the side facing the main island's coast, it is possible to observe vertical fractures, which are an interesting example of basaltic columnar jointing. In the surrounding seabed, the landscape is equally fascinating, with large basalt blocks, small caves, and a vast quantity of rounded pebbles scattered over a sandy bed.
The Maria Vaz Islet is a place of great interest for observing underwater life. Its waters shelter remarkable biodiversity, with over a hundred marine species coexisting. This underwater environment is a vital habitat for various forms of life, from different types of fish to various species of algae and corals. The ecological richness of the islet is recognized, and its protection is fundamental for the preservation of this marine ecosystem in the Azores.
