The Parish Church of Caveira, also known as the Church of the Blessed Souls, is located in the parish of Caveira, belonging to the municipality of Santa Cruz das Flores, on the idyllic Flores Island, Azores. The temple stands in an isolated and prominent manner, on a levelled and elevated churchyard relative to the main street of the village. This position grants it remarkable visibility within the urban fabric of the locality, inviting contemplation of the building and its serene environment. In the churchyard, visitors can observe elements such as an old bell and a baptismal font, which add a touch of history and character to the place.
The church's architecture reflects the traditional characteristics of Azorean religious buildings, featuring a main structure of stone masonry which, plastered and whitewashed, radiates a luminous presence. The building's floor plan is rectangular, composed of a main nave and a chancel, with a sacristy and a storage annex attached. One of the most striking visual aspects is the contrast between the whiteness of the walls and the exposed stonework used in various details. This stonework can be observed in the plinth that serves as a base, in the quoins that mark the corners, in the cornices that top the facades, in the mouldings that frame the openings, in the imposing triumphal arch and in the pulpit's basin, as well as in the steps and stairs, both interior and exterior. The roofs, with their half-round tile coverings, complete the image of a temple solidly integrated into the local landscape.
The history of this temple dates back to the mid-18th century. The construction of a small church dedicated to the Blessed Souls began in 1767, on a site that today corresponds to the parish cemetery. This invocation, deeply rooted in popular devotion, has been maintained over time, despite an attempt in 1835 to change it to Nossa Senora do Livramento, a request that was ultimately refused. In 1823, the locality of Caveira was elevated to a parish, attesting to the growing importance of the community. However, by around 1867, the original building was in an advanced state of degradation. The community, driven by remarkable resilience, then began the construction of the church observed today, maintaining the same invocation. The first stone was laid in 1870, and the construction, which was a slow and challenging effort, received valuable financial support from the emigrated community in the United States of America, as well as from various local personalities. The chancel was finally inaugurated in 1880, marking a high point in the parish's history.
