The Church of the Holy Spirit is located in Feteira, one of the parishes that make up the municipality of Horta, on Faial Island, Azores. It stands in the center of a vast plain, making it a visible and easily identifiable landmark for those traveling through this rural area of the island.
This temple is one of Faial's oldest religious buildings, with its existence documented since at least 1568, according to royal records of the time. Over the centuries, the church has undergone several interventions and adaptations. A major rebuilding occurred in 1824, which significantly altered its appearance. Later, in 1864, its tower was completed, giving it the silhouette we know today.
After the major works of the 19th century, the church acquired an imposing presence, extending for approximately 35 meters in length. Its architecture, resulting from different constructive periods, combines elements that bear witness to the temple's evolution. According to old descriptions, its original structure comprised three naves and five columns, with a wooden ceiling, elements that give an idea of its primitive configuration.
Inside the Church of the Holy Spirit, visitors will find a space dedicated to the devotion of the Divine Holy Spirit, a theme to which the chancel is consecrated and where a canvas representation stands out. The church's collection includes various pieces of interest, such as a large chest in the sacristy, a large piece of furniture that holds a crucifix. On one of the side altars, a sculptural group depicting the Holy Family offers a moment of contemplation and appreciation for sacred art.
