Location

The Ponta Garça Lighthouse is situated on the south coast of the island of São Miguel, in the locality of Ponta Garça, municipality of Vila Franca do Campo. Built in an area known as Cinzeiro, this coastal landmark stands at an altitude of 101 meters above sea level. Its elevated position offers a wide perspective over the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding coastline, providing characteristic views of the Azorean landscape.

Architecture and Function

With a height of 14 meters, the Ponta Garça Lighthouse tower is cylindrical in shape and features a white paint finish that makes it visible in the landscape. Its structure is complemented by eight radial false buttresses that rise to the circular balcony at the top, which is painted red. At the summit, a glass dome topped by a weathervane crowns the tower. Attached to the tower is a rectangular building that historically served as support for the lighthouse operations.

This lighthouse plays an essential role in maritime navigation safety. Its light, which combines white and red sectors, primarily guides vessels, indicating the presence of specific coastal zones and contributing to the safe orientation of ships in the vicinity of the island.

History and Evolution

The construction of the Ponta Garça Lighthouse was completed in 1957, the year it began operations. Since then, the lighthouse has undergone various technological adaptations to optimize its performance. Initially, its illumination was generated by acetylene lamps, but in 1980 it was connected to the public electricity grid, modernizing the system.

On the exterior of the complex, a granite plaque bears the inscription "MINISTRY OF NATIONAL DEFENSE NAVY NATIONAL MARITIME AUTHORITY DIRECTORATE OF LIGHTHOUSES, PORT AUTHORITY OF PONTA DELGADA PONTA DA GARÇA LIGHTHOUSE 1957". This inscription not only marks its construction date but also evokes the entity responsible for its continuous management and maintenance over the decades, ensuring its relevance as a coastal reference point.
