Architectural Features

Like many small chapels dotting the Azorean landscape, the Falca Hermitage displays modest and traditional architecture. Its construction is marked by simplicity, reflecting the built style of the region's rural hermitages. Of reduced dimensions, the building showcases the functionality and devotion underlying it, without great adornments, but with the typical robustness of local constructions. Its simple aesthetic is a testament to how faith and community intertwine in the daily life of these islands.

A Symbol of Devotion to the Holy Spirit

This hermitage holds deep cultural and religious significance, being intrinsically linked to the devotion of the Holy Spirit, one of the most expressive and heartfelt traditions of the Azores. It serves as a hub for annual celebrations, which include coronations and the sharing of food with the population, known as "bodos". The Falca Hermitage, as part of a local "Império do Espírito Santo" (Empire of the Holy Spirit), is more than a building; it is a space where secular rituals are perpetuated, symbolizing the unity, solidarity, and identity of São Bartolomeu de Regatos.
