The Priolo Environmental Centre is located in the locality of Pedreira, in the municipality of Nordeste, on São Miguel Island, Azores. It is integrated into the serene Cancela do Cinzeiro Forest Recreation Reserve, a naturally rich area that is part of the Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme Special Protection Area, a crucial habitat for Azorean biodiversity.
Its privileged position provides it with a surrounding environment of great natural beauty, immersed in the lush landscape of the island's east, characterized by dense forest and preserved natural heritage.
Inaugurated in December 2007, the Priolo Environmental Centre was conceived with the central purpose of protecting and disseminating knowledge about the Priolo, a truly unique bird. This small bird is endemic to São Miguel Island, meaning its natural habitat is restricted to this part of the archipelago, making it one of Europe's rarest and most endangered species.
The centre is managed by the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), a non-governmental organization dedicated to conservation. Its mission focuses not only on the Priolo but also on safeguarding the Laurel Forest, the unique ecosystem that serves as home to this bird and other equally endemic and valuable plant species, contributing to the preservation of a rare natural legacy of the Azores.
Upon visiting the Priolo Environmental Centre, one finds a welcoming space dedicated to interpreting local nature. Inside, it hosts an informative and engaging exhibition, illustrating the history and conservation efforts of the Priolo and its habitat.
Visitors can explore interactive panels and elements that deepen knowledge about Azorean fauna and flora, particularly the species inhabiting the Laurel Forest. Outside, the Centre's grounds include a garden with endemic plants, allowing for closer observation of the characteristic vegetation of the Azores' natural forest.
