As Caldeiras are located in the urban area of the parish of Furnas, in the municipality of Povoação, on the island of São Miguel. This place is situated in the heart of a vast depression of volcanic origin, which defines much of the surrounding landscape. Its integration into the inhabited area of Furnas makes it easily accessible to visitors.
In this part of the island, volcanic activity is notably and continuously felt. As Caldeiras is an extensive fumarolic field, the largest in the Azores, where the earth breathes through various openings. Visitors can observe the intense activity of fumaroles, characterized by the emission of vapors and gases that gush from the ground at high temperatures, creating a sulfureous and unmistakable atmosphere.
The site is dotted with various water springs, each with its own characteristics. There are mineral waters with remarkable acidity, warm thermal waters, and even hyperthermal waters that reach temperatures close to boiling point. Over time, these waters have been popularly associated with various therapeutic purposes, being used to alleviate health problems, from respiratory conditions to nervous imbalances. The diversity of compositions and temperatures of these springs is a direct reflection of the rich subsoil geology.
As Caldeiras are not just a natural phenomenon; they are also an integral part of Furnas' culture and stories. An example of this is the famous Caldeira Pêro Botelho, also known as the "Mouth of Hell," shrouded in legends passed down through generations. It is said that in this caldera a ill-tempered man disappeared, and even today, on certain occasions, his laments seem to echo, with the caldera reacting by throwing smoke and stones if his name is uttered. This connection between the force of nature and popular narratives gives As Caldeiras a unique character and a profound symbolic value for the local community.
